All American 400
Race:
Mitch Cobb brought the field of 36 cars to the green flag Saturday afternoon to start the Adam Petty All American 400 in Nashville. He was jumped on the outside going into turn one and slotted into 2nd place on the first lap. Mitch was content just to set his own pace and conserve his equipment for the long 200 laps at the Music City Motorplex's 5/8th's of a mile raceway. Early on he a good battles with Eddie Mercer and Boris Jurkovic before settling into 4th place as the race neared the halfway mark.
At the 100 lap halfway point the car's handling rapidly began to deteriorate. Then entering turn 1 the left side A-arm snapped shooting Mitch up the racetrack, he was able to keep the car out of the wall but was forced to make an immediate green flag pitstop. After stopping on pitroad the crew went to work on the #94 Southern Waters Outfitters Ford, but repairs were not able to be made and the car was pushed behind the wall. He was credited with 33rd position.
"This kind of thing happens in racing." Stated Mitch while leaving the racetrack. "You just don't expect the same thing to happen two races in a row. We will take a hard look at what is going on. The good thing is that we ran great, I'm confident that our strategy would have put us in position with a chance to win by the end of the day."
"We are taking the track record home with us...that's an accomplishment we are proud of."
Qualifying:
Mitch Cobb lined up first to qualify and that is exactly where he qualified for tomorrow's 200-lap All American 400, part of a doubleheader event with the CRA Super Series and the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour. Mitch broke a two year old track record by besting the other 38 cars during this afternoon's qualifying.
"It felt slow actually." Mitch said when asked about his record setting lap. "My spotter called out 18.03 after the first lap and I thought he said 19.03. Then on the final lap he called out 17.96 and I thought he meant 18.96. I never had any idea the 17 second range could be attained."
Mitch had been in the top 5 during practice for most of the day, only dropping out of the top 5 for one session to work on old tire race-runs. He and the team are confident they found a setup that can go the distance for two hundred laps tomorrow.
"The car is driving nice. We changed up the setup from last July when I ran my first race here. This place is so historic, I would love to add my name to the list of previous winners here."
The race is scheduled to begin Saturday at approximately 3 PM. Please check out www.craracing.net or www.mitchcobbracing.com for all the news from Nashville.
